Here you will find a wealth of information on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), its origins, as well as the influential figures behind its development, including Carl Jung and the concept of cognitive functions.

A Brief History of Myers-Briggs

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, commonly referred to as MBTI, is one of the most widely used personality assessments in the world. It was created by the motherdaughter team of Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, who were inspired by the work of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. Katharine Briggs was a writer and researcher, while her daughter Isabel Myers was an author and a keen observer of human behavior. Together, they embarked on a mission to develop a practical tool that would allow individuals to understand and appreciate their unique personalities. Drawing heavily from the theories and concepts proposed by Carl Jung in his book “Psychological Types,” Briggs and Myers developed a questionnaire in 1942, which eventually evolved into the MBTI. Their aim was to make Jung1s complex ideas more accessible and applicable to a broader audience.

The Influence of Carl Jung

Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, is considered one of the most influential figures in the field of psychology. Born in 1875, Jung’s work delved into the depths of the human psyche, exploring the ways in which individuals perceive and interact with the world. Jung introduced the concept of psychological types, suggesting that individuals have distinct preferences in how they gather information, make decisions, and engage with the outside world. He proposed eight cognitive functions: extraverted thinking (Te), introverted thinking (Ti), extraverted feeling (Fe), introverted feeling (Fi), extraverted sensing (Se), introverted sensing (Si), extraverted intuition (Ne), and introverted intuition (Ni). These functions, he argued, form the building blocks of personality. The work of Carl Jung laid the foundation for the development of the MBTI, providing a framework through which individuals could explore their unique preferences and better understand themselves and others.

Exploring the Cognitive Function

The cognitive functions, as defined by Carl Jung, serve as the underlying principles behind the MBTI and play a vital role in understanding personality types. Each of the sixteen Myers-Briggs types is associated with a specific combination of cognitive functions, which determine how individuals perceive and interact with the world. The four dichotomies of the MBTI (Extraversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, and Judging vs. Perceiving) are linked to the eight cognitive functions proposed by Jung. By exploring these cognitive functions and how they manifest in different personality types, we can gain profound insights into our strengths, weaknesses, and preferred ways of approaching life. On our website, you will find detailed descriptions of each cognitive function, how they operate, and their influence on personality. We provide valuable resources, articles, and interactive tools to help you deepen your understanding of yourself and others, enhancing personal growth, relationships, and communication.
